just rp it: one more time

how to play.

1. Drop a comment with one or more of your muses. It can be empty if you want me to make a scenario, or you can toss one at me. Prompts are boss. (a word, song, lyric, picture, phrase, a meme prompt, anything). Specify if there's something you do or don't want, otherwise I could throw anything at you: AUs, shippiness, awfulness. You've been warned, son.
1b. If you want to continue a verse we started in another thread somewhere, specify it in the comment or subject line.

2. In the subject line, you can specify any of my muses you might want to play with (including OCs, who have their own list), or you can ask me to pick someone. No muses are off-limits. Otherwise, I'll pick or randomize someone.
Don't be afraid to ask for anybody - if I'm not feeling it, I'll be honest.
2b. Muses I would really love to play right now, in case you are having a hard time choosing:
Peter Quill, Dean Winchester, Tony Stark, Lois Lane, Regina Mills, Phil Coulson, Cordelia Chase, John Constantine, Pepper Potts, Lucifer.  Also voicetesting Jack Harkness...

3. just rp with me. if something jives really well, maybe we can continue it in another one of these later, sort of like a super casual verse. if it doesn't, it doesn't.

[ "You look great for a dead guy."

the words greet him only moments after he walks into his office, and he turns to the very familiar source of the voice, who stands with folded arms against the wall.

natasha romanoff.

it's been so long since he's seen her in person, instead of just on recordings and video logs, that he is taken aback by the changes in her, now that they are face to face. beyond that, he's quite simply shook to find her inexplicably here, given everything, but his poker face remains almost fully intact, except for the slight shift in his eyes, that he knows she is able to read like a book.

he breaks this game of spy vs spy awkward silence finally by saying: ]

I've had some work done.

[ She'd positioned herself in such a way that she could remain unnoticed if anyone else walked through that door. But when it's Coulson...

He still gets almost all the way to the desk before she speaks up to make her presence known. Just because she'd needed that moment to let her world readjust.

She sees that shift - knows she'd caught him off guard. She'd be proud of that accomplishment if he hadn't done the same to her. She hadn't been sure what she'd find here. It's why she'd come alone. That and she wanted answers and if she'd brought Clint along, he'd have punched their former handler in the mouth before letting him get a word out.

....She hasn't written off punching him herself yet, but at least she can control herself long enough to get those answers. ]

If you tell me we had a vial of the T-Virus or an angel tucked away somewhere in SHIELD's Vaults, I may just have to murder you myself. Sir.

[ It takes talent to put that much disrespect into an otherwise very respectful title. ]

[ hoo boy, is she angry. one very angry, dangerous lady.

this is fine. ]

Something else. [ the words have weight, significant weight, as cryptic as they are ] For it's what worth, I'm sorry.

Fury thought it would be... easier. [ it sounds just as ludicrous coming out of his mouth to him as he's sure it does to her. but it's complicated. ]

Easier for who, exactly?

[ Careful, Coulson. Thems dangerous words. Then again, Fury keeping secrets like this... He'd even hidden his own death from her when he thought it would be more convincing. She still hadn't entirely forgiven him for that. ]

Fury I expect this from. [ Now. ] You...

[ There's a long moment of silence from her as she lifts a hand to pinch the bridge of her nose between two fingers, as if visibly trying to calm herself. Reign in her reaction to this information.

When she speaks again, there's a tell-tale note of emotions raw in her voice, a momentary slip in her control that he'd be able to pick up on. Natasha only lets emotion show if she's playing you - or if there's too many for her to sort through at once. There's hurt there, and a grief so deep that not even she can fully disguise it. ]

Were you ever going to tell us?

[ there's a pause on his end as he figures out how to answer that. now, with her here, he at least owes her honesty of some kind, given the depth of deception she's now seen through. ] I don't know.

[ it's not the answer she wants, he knows, but it's the actual truth. there was no stipulation on how long the silence would last, beyond the implication that they should 'never' know. it had never actually felt like that to him - never. he hadn't ever allowed himself to fully believe it. ] Other things had to take priority. [ he isn't offering it as an excuse, because he knows that as excuses go, that one is paper thin and insufficient. but he wants her to understand that he's had his own battles to fight. ones she can no doubt speculate about, given her role in what had happened to SHIELD in the first place. ]

For what it's worth, I'm sorry.
